Texas Specialty License Plates
Specialty license plates are an excellent way to personalize your vehicle, support an organization or cause, or demonstrate your membership in a group.
The
Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TXDMV) collaborates with myplates.com to create personalized plates; on that website, you can choose which organization you want to support, which plates you want, and whether you want a random or personalized number and letter combination.
What Are Specialty License Plates
Specialty Plates are one-of-a-kind license plate designs that cost an additional fee and represent something meaningful to the driver. The fee varies according to the plate design you choose.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website has many specialty plates. Hobby, nature, sports, and even fraternities/sororities are among the themes of hobbies, high schools, and Texas institutions. Some organizations provide financial support to specific charities, and the purchase fee is usually donated.
Specialty plates can be personalized with a special message or phrase, but the Texas Department must first approve the message of Motor Vehicles. There are no restrictions on profanity, gang or drug references, or the number "69" unless used in conjunction with a vehicle. The number of characters permitted varies according to the plate chosen. Personalization is also an extra cost.
How To Get Specialty License Plates
To pick up special plates or order them in person rather than online, you must make an appointment at the tax office. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (
TxDMV) has two types of specialty license plates available:
Non-qualifying: These plates are available to all Texas drivers. To apply for specialty plates, fill out
Form VTR-999.
Qualifying: You must demonstrate your eligibility for these plates, ranging from agriculture plates to those displaying a branch of military service. Fill out the appropriate license plate application, ensuring that you meet the requirements.
Most specialty license plates can be personalized. The plates usually arrive in our office a few weeks after your order.
TxDMV.gov or myplates.com are the websites where you can order specialty plates. Click on a plate image to find out what you need to know to order that license plate. You must pick up your license plates at the tax office. Government-issued photo identification requires a driver's license, passport, or military identification and your
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or current license plate number.
Renewals on Texas Specialty License
Specialty plates must be renewed on a one-year, five-year, or ten-year basis; the term length varies depending on the customization. Before your license plate expires, the
Texas DMV will send you a registration renewal notice. If your specialty plate is not renewed within 60 days of its expiration date, it will be canceled and available for purchase by anyone else.
