PA Registration

First-time PA registration is required for your vehicle if the following applies to you:

  • Recently moved to PA
  • Recently bought a vehicle
  • Recently received your vehicle as gift or donation
The vehicle must be registered between 1 and 20 days of moving into Pennsylvania, at which time you will also complete any necessary titling of the vehicle or title transfer, which occurs in the Driver/Vehicle Service Center in your area.

Get Auto Insurance Policy

There are requirements in PA for standard liability auto insurance which you must meet with your policy. If you don’t have insurance, you don’t qualify for registration. Registration Paperwork to Prepare

If you just bought a new car off the lot, you won’t have a lot to do for registration of the vehicle as the dealer will complete the process for you. If this situation pertains to you, you will simply have to report to the DOT office with your $36 registration fee and the proper proof of insurance.

In all other cases, you will need the following documents to get the registration under way:

  1. Vehicle Certificate of Title
  2. Insurance Policy Proof
  3. Form MV-1 which you will receive in office
  4. Form MV-4ST for used vehicles from PA also obtained in office
  5. Form MV-904 for personalized plates if wanted, which you can download at Application for Special Registration Plate.
  6. VIN inspection certificate if vehicle is from out-of-state

Registration Costs in PA

Your initial cost for registering your PA vehicle is going to be $36. There are discounts given to some drivers, such as retirees who are given a discounted cost of $10 for registration if qualified.

The only additional costs added will be for personalized plates or replacement stickers, plates, or registration.

Visit PennDOT Service Center

Once you get all your paperwork in place, it is time to visit the Driver and Vehicle Service Center, which is where the process is completed.

You will also get your license plates as you register your vehicle. If you decide that you don’t want standard plates, you can get personalized license plates in PA for an additional $20. If you choose this option, you will receive your plates by mail in 8 to 10 weeks. If you opt for standard plates, you receive them immediately in the office as you complete registration.

Affix Registration Stickers

You also receive your stickers which must be attached to your plates after received. There are instructions provided to ensure that these stickers are placed in the right spot of the tags.

Registration Tax Credit in PA

There is no tax deduction given to Pennsylvania drivers who register their vehicles because the costs are not based on the value of the car.
