Group Special License Plates In Colorado

More than 325,000 people have so-called special Colorado license plates honoring various groups in the state, ranging from a few thousand to nearly 100,000 for the ten most popular. Because of Colorado Department of Revenue rules, fourteen less popular special plates appeared to be on the verge of being phased out this year or next because not enough people had requested them. However, thanks to a last-minute reprieve, all of them will survive.

Colorado Group Special License Plate

The group special and regular plates share the same white mountain range, but that's about it. The color of the sky and the emblem in the center will change depending on your chosen cause or organization. Adopt a Shelter Pet (with a yellow sky and cute paw print) to Wildlife Sporting (with an amber sunset and leaping trout). On the bottom, the slogan or group name will also be printed. Each special group plate can be customized except for the Columbine, Firefighter, Greyhound Lovers, Pioneer, Raptor, and Support the 10th Mountain Division plates. Adopt A Shelter Pet (Senate Bill 10-1214)

These plates are available for passenger vehicles, trucks with a gross weight of fewer than 16,000 pounds, noncommercial (not available for any vehicle registered Tax Class A- International Registration Plan- IRP), or recreation vehicles, motor homes, and motorcycles. Anyone registering their vehicle with the Adopt a Pet plate is eligible for this license plate. Fees:

A certificate valid for one set of plates will be issued to a person authorized by the Rocky Mountain Indian Chamber of Commerce. Each electronic certificate is valid for two weeks from the date of issuance and requires a $25.00 donation to the Rocky Mountain Indian Chamber of Commerce. Fees:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) (Senate Bill 15-229)

The Boy Scouts license plate is a limited edition commemorative plate that will be available from July 15, 2009, to June 30, 2016, or until the department runs out of license plates, whichever comes first. Plates issued during this period may be used after June 30, 2016, until they are damaged, destroyed, lost, stolen, or become unreadable. Trucks weighing less than sixteen thousand pounds empty weight, passenger cars, motorcycles, and noncommercial (not available for any vehicle registered Tax Class A- International Registration Plan- IRP), or recreation vehicles may be issued the Boy Scouts license plate. Broncos Charities (House Bill 06-133)

For each authorizing certificate, a qualified individual must donate $40.00 to the Denver Broncos Charities organization. Fees:

Carbon Fund

Senate Bill 08-186 established the Carbon Fund group's special license plate. Carbon Fund license plates may only be issued to individuals authorized by the Colorado Carbon Fund through The Climate Trust. Each authorized person will receive a certificate good for one set of Carbon Fund license plates. A qualifying person must contribute a minimum of $25.00 to the Colorado Carbon Fund or offset 50% of their vehicle's annual emissions through Natural Capitalism Solutions. For each certificate authorizing the Carbon Fund license plate issuance, donations will be transferred to the Colorado Carbon Fund. Per the certificate, only one Carbon Fund license plate set is permitted. When the certificate is issued, the County Motor Vehicle Office will keep it and destroy it. Fees:
