Colorado Driving Skills Reexamination
The State may require you to come in for a reexamination for various reasons. We will request a reexamination if you have two accidents on your record within three years. You may also be asked to re-examine if a family member or doctor believes it is necessary for medical reasons. A police officer may also file an incident report requesting that you re-examine.
Request For Reexamination
Based on written information from a doctor, a law enforcement agency, a court, or an immediate family member, the department may request that a driver undergo a reexamination.
The request cannot be kept private. The driver has the right to know why they are being required to retake the test. The driver can obtain a copy of the written information used by our office to request the reexamination by providing proof of identification and a Driving Record fee.
If the driver has a medical condition, a family member should contact the driver's doctor and have the doctor write a request for a reexamination.
Extension For Reexamination
Reexaminations cannot be extended unless a doctor requests it. The doctor must provide the reason for the extension as well as the length of the extension on letterhead. The restraint will be imposed if the extension time period exceeds two weeks from the original time request. The action will be rescinded if the driver can take and pass the reexamination on the first attempt.
The driver is notified by mail that they have twenty days from the date of the correspondence to retake the test. The letter directs the driver to the closest full-service driver's license office.
Colorado DMV Reexamination Hearing
A DMV reexamination hearing in California is an in-person evaluation of your driving ability. The goal is to see if you have the physical and mental abilities to drive a car safely. A reexamination is also possible.

- Hearing for Physical and Mental Conditions (P&M)
- Hearing on medical suspension
If the DMV notifies you that a reexamination/P&M hearing is required, you must:
- With the assistance of your doctor, complete and submit a DMV Driver Medical Evaluation Form ("DME"), and
- Attend the in-person reexamination hearing, which will be held within ten (10) days of receiving the notice.
It would be best if you also considered the following before the reexamination hearing:
- Get a full copy of your driving record.
- Make arrangements for your doctor or a medical specialist to attend the hearing, or submit a detailed letter of support.
- Complete a driver's safety course and obtain a completion certificate.
The reexamination will be conducted by a DMV hearing officer at a local California DMV driver safety office. The hearing officer will assess your driving abilities during your reexamination. To accomplish this, they may:
- Examine your DME form,
- Accept your and your doctor's testimony, and
- Conduct a written, vision, and driving skills examination.
If you do not appear for your P&M hearing, the DMV will automatically suspend or revoke your license. The DMV's action will stand until you reschedule and appear for another hearing. At your P&M hearing, you may be represented by a DMV hearing attorney.
A lawyer with administrative or DMV hearing experience can be extremely beneficial in assisting you to "pass" the reexamination. Alternatively, establish a stellar track record for pursuing your case in court via a writ of mandate.
