Illinois New to Your State

Welcome to Illinois!  Now that you have made the move to Illinois, it is time to become an official resident.  4DMV.com has compiled all the various information you need so you can easily understand what is required of you, now that you are a resident of Illinois.  We make the transition as smooth as possible to ensure that you have the best start possible!

As an Illinois resident you are responsible for changing your important documentation such as applying for your Illinois driver’s license, registering your vehicles and recreational vehicles, and other important matters such as registering to vote.

Driver’s License or ID Card

Once you have moved to Illinois you are given a time line to apply for your Illinois driver’s license- which is 90 days.  In order to apply, you must do so at your local Secretary of State office and bring with you:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of you home address
  • Your Social Security card or number
  • Proof of your birth date
  • And, your signature will be required
  • $10 for your new Illinois driver’s license
You will also be required to take and pass:

  • The Illinois driver’s exam
  • The Illinois vision exam
  • The Illinois road exam, if applicable

If you want to apply for your Illinois ID card, then you will need to gather all the same documentation as above.  You won’t, however, be required to take any licensing tests.  The cost to obtain your Illinois ID card will be $20.

Vehicle Registration

If you are a vehicle owner, the state of Illinois grants 30 days for you to register your vehicle.  For more information on registering your vehicle visit 4DMV.com’s Vehicle Registration section.

Military Personnel

If you are stationed in Illinois as an active duty military member then you are not required to change your existing documents, such as your driver’s license.

Your spouse and dependent children that live at home with you are also exempt from having to change their important documents.
