Changing Your Address

Whether you have recently moved to the state of Illinois from another state or you have moved within the state, you must inform the Secretary of State’s office in order to properly update your address change on important documents such as your driver’s license.  Completing an address change is not as difficult as you may think, in fact it may be done right here online by completing a Notice of Address Change.

Changing Your Address on Your Driver’s License

  • When you complete and submit the Notice of Address Change it does not mean that you need to obtain a new license.  The Notice of Address Change simply informs the Secretary of State of your address change so that they can update their files.
  • If you want to replace your driver’s license for it to be updated with your new address, your will need to visit your local Driver Services office in person.  There will be a $5 application fee for your new license.
Changing Your Address on Your Commercial Driver’s Licenses

  • If you are a holder of a commercial driver’s license you are required by law to report your address change to the SOS office within 10 days of your move.  All commercial driver license holders must report their address change in person to their local SOS driver services office.
Changing Your Address on Your Title and Registration

  • When you complete your Notice of Address Change form, you can also update your title and registration with your new address for all vehicles that are titled and registered in your name.  The form also allows you to indicate a temporary address change. When you indicate a temporary change your important documents such as the title and registration will remain the same until you further notify the SOS office will wait until you notify them with you permanent address.
Request Applications for Corrected Title and Registration Certificates

  • You guessed it, that handy little address change form which is so convenient and can be filled out online can also be used to request corrected title and registration certificates for all vehicles that you own.  The form provides boxes which will need to be checked and the proper information completed.  Once you submit the form, you will then receive the applications in the mail.
  • When you fill out the form, you can request an application for each vehicle.  There will be a small fee in order
  • When you apply for an updated title, the fee is a bit more as you will be charged $65.  Both registration and title application fees will be due when you apply, not when you complete the to obtain a registration certificate which is $3.  form.
Changing Your Address By Mail

  • You can also submit your address change by mail.  You will need to download a printable address change form which can be found at  Notice of Address Change and mail it to:
