There are many defensive driving techniques that you should be aware of and begin to practice which include:

  • Be aware of the space within your vehicle and always have an escape route planned in case of emergency
  • Always keep a safe distance between yourself and other drivers on the road
  • Survey your forward path for at least 12 to 15 seconds in order to get an idea of what lies ahead
  • Always check each direction prior to making a turn even when you have the right of way
  • Use extreme caution when your field vision is limited
  • Use caution with all vehicles on the road and be aware of state vehicles such as school buses and maFL trucks
  • When traveling by or through constructions sites or emergency scenes use extra cautionary measures
  • Report reckless driving that you may witness on the road as well as slow down so you can get out of their way
  • Always check you brakes to make sure they are in good working condition
  • Always drive within the posted speed limits making exceptions as to when the road or whether conditions are poor
  • Always follow the Florida safety laws
  • Make sure that you drive with your lights on in dark hours and fog
  • Always pass at a secure distance
  • Take extra precaution when entering a bridge especially during the winter, as they are first to freeze.
