Michigan First Time Vehicle Registration

First time vehicle registration is required when:

  • You have recently moved to Michigan from another U.S. state
  • You were gifted the vehicle
  • You have inherited the vehicle
  • You have just purchased a vehicle

Getting Your Paperwork Together

Vehicle owners that purchase their vehicles from a vehicle dealership will have the paperwork for titling and vehicle registration completed for them. For those that purchase a used vehicle from a private party, they are required to complete the process themselves.

To complete the vehicle registration process, you will need the following documentation:

  1. Your vehicle title.
  2. Proof of Michigan auto insurance.
  3. Proof of identity.

Calculate Vehicle Registration Fees

The newer your vehicle, the higher the cost of your vehicle registration fees will be. This is because the Secretary of State office calculates the fees based on the original manufacturer’s MSRP.

For vehicles that are older than a 1984 model, the fees will be based on the weight of the vehicle.
