License For First Time Drivers In Michigan

Learning to drive is a thrilling milestone on the path to adulthood. It brings a slew of new liberties, but it's also worth noting that teen drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident than any other age group. As a result, Michigan has implemented a graduated driver licensing system. Anyone planning to drive on Michigan's public roads must have a driver's license. The licensing program is more complicated than in most other states.

The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System

Level 1 License

The GDL Level 1 License is the first step in Michigan's Graduated Driver Licensing program, which teaches teens to drive by gradually increasing their driving privileges. Level 1 license allows you to drive a car while supervised by a licensed parent/guardian or any licensed driver over the age of 21 if designated by your parent/guardian.

Driver Education Segment 1

You are now 14 and 8 months old and eligible to begin your training as a new Michigan driver. You must complete segment 1 of driver's ed before you can get your level 1 license (the equivalent of a learner's permit).
  • At least 24 hours of classroom instruction
  • Six or more hours of driving instruction
  • Driving observation for four hours
  • A written examination covering Michigan's traffic laws and regulations
After completing segment 1, you can go to your local Secretary of State's office to obtain your level 1 license. Just make sure to bring the necessary identification documents. You must bring the following documentation:
  • Your uniqueness
  • Citizenship or legal presence in the United States
  • Number of Social Security
  • Michigan residency (2 documents, one of which may be in the name of the parent)
You can practice driving with your level 1 license as long as you are accompanied by a licensed adult who is 21 or older.

Driver Education Segment 2

The next step toward getting your Michigan driver's license is to finish segment 2, but there are a few requirements you must first meet:
  • You must have had your level 1 license for at least three months.
  • You must have at least 30 hours of parent-supervised driving experience, including at least 2 hours at night.
Segment 2 has a minimum of six hours of instruction. After that, you should concentrate on passing your road skills test.

Level 2 License

When you reach the age of 16, you are eligible to apply for your level 2 license. However, before applying, you must have completed segments 1 and 2 of driver's education and logged 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, including at least 10 at night. Once you've met those requirements, it's time to show off your driving skills at an independently run testing facility. You must bring a registered and insured vehicle to the exam. Following a vehicle inspection, your examiner will instruct you to perform a variety of maneuvers on a closed course and operational roads. These could include:
  • Backing and parallel parking
  • Coming to a halt at a specific point
  • Approaching and turning at intersections
  • Lane changes and approaching curves
To help you prepare for the exam, the state provides a study guide. The same document contains a driving log, which you should use to keep track of your practice hours. You must bring the completed log to your appointment. You will receive your level 2 license after passing your road skills exam.

Restrictions

You can begin driving on your own after receiving your level 2 license. There are, however, some ground rules you must follow if you want to keep your newfound freedom. You cannot do the following with your level 2 license:
  • While driving, do not use a cell phone.
  • Drive after 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Driving with more than one underage passenger
There are several exceptions to rules 2 and 3, so make sure you are aware of them. You will be upgraded to a level 3 or unrestricted Michigan driver's license once you reach the age of 17 and have completed at least six months of safe driving with your level 2 license.

Level 3 License

The Michigan Graduated Driver Licensing system concludes with a Level 3 license. It is not restricted in any way. For teenagers, the GDL system ends when they reach the age of 18. If you are eligible, you will be granted full driving privileges.
  • Level 2 licenses must be held for a minimum of six months.
  • You must remain violation and suspension free for 12 months and have no at-fault crashes.
  • You do not need to go to a Secretary of State office to upgrade to a Level 3 license; it will be mailed to your address on file. There is no charge.

Adult Driver's License

Before taking the driving skills test, you must practice driving with a licensed adult for at least 30 days. The 30-day practice period may be waived if you have a valid foreign driver's license, a license from another state, or were previously licensed in Michigan. Driver education is not required, but it is strongly advised. You must not receive more than 25 points to pass, or you will receive an automatic failure. If you fail, you have 24 hours to reschedule another test. The examiner will give you a certificate if you pass the skills test. You will need to return to a Secretary of State branch office and provide:
  • Your driving skills test certificate
  • Your TIP
  • Identity documents
