What is a Utah Bill of Sale?
When hunting for a new vehicle, the motor vehicle bill of sale is an important document to keep in mind before making any major purchases.The bill of sale is an agreement that that transfers ownership from the seller to the purchaser. Considered a legal document, it can also smooth the process of obtaining a title and registration for a car. DMV bill of sale forms can be a generic outline that lists information about the vehicle, seller and purchaser, or your state may require that specific information be contained on the form and notarized. Some states, like Utah, offer a standardized form that contains all of the necessary information.
However, no bill of sale can take the place of a car title. States requiring a sales and use taxes on vehicles use the motor vehicle bill of sale to determine the amounts based on information contained in the sale document, such as make, model, year, and mileage.
Is a Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale Necessary in Utah?
The state of Utah requires that sellers complete and sign the Form TC-843, also known as a motor vehicle bill of sale. The bill of sale provides legal proof that the purchaser owns the vehicle, and the seller can no longer claim ownership of the vehicle being purchased. The Form TC-843 is available online through the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles website.
In addition to the Form TC-843, a seller must provide the purchaser with the current title of the vehicle to complete the proof of ownership. Utah requires both the DMV bill of sale and the signed current title to be presented in order to register the vehicle. The amount listed as the selling price on the bill of sale is used to calculate the purchaser’s sales and use tax on the vehicle.
