First-Time Vehicle Registration in NV

You need to complete a first-time vehicle registration process in the state of Nevada when:

  • You have just moved to Nevada from another state
  • You have received a vehicle as a gift
  • You have just purchased a new or used vehicle
  • You own a vehicle that you have never registered
If you happen to be a student or an active military personnel that lives in Nevada, then the state will grant you permission to keep your current vehicle registration information. However, if you obtain employment in Nevada, you will have to register your vehicle in Nevada State.

If you’ve just relocated to Nevada, you want to make certain that you register your vehicle, and obtain a state’s driver’s license within 30 days of moving to the state or you will face a fine up to $1,000.

Vehicle Registration – Insurance:

Nevada law states that each vehicle owner must have the proper amount of liability insurance which is set by the state. Higher amounts can be purchased, but, it is mandatory that each vehicle owner have at least the minimum amount. Getting Your Vehicle Registration Paperwork Together

If you purchase your vehicle from a dealer, then the vehicle registration paperwork should be completed at the time of the vehicle purchase. However, if you purchase is through a private party, you will be required to complete the process yourself.

You will have 30 days from the date of purchase to complete the vehicle registration process.

A VIN inspection will be completed by the DMV on all vehicles that have never been registered in the state of Nevada.

If you are registering an out-of-state vehicle, you will also need the most recent vehicle registration information and the out-of-state license plates for the vehicle.

Calculate NV Vehicle Registration Fees

Your vehicle registration fee amount will be based on the class of your vehicle and its weight. Nevada State also requires various other taxes that you will be responsible for. To calculate your registration costs you can do so by visiting Nevada’s fee estimation page.

Additional vehicle registration fees and taxes you will be responsible for include:

  • Title fees, if requesting a new title
  • Prison industries fee of 50 cents for each plate.

  • If you live in White Pine, Churchill, or Clark County, you will have an additional fee.
If you are:

  • Blind
  • A spouse of a deceased veteran
  • A disabled veteran
  • A veteran with war-time service
You may qualify for an exemption from the Governmental Services tax, and will receive a tax exemption from the county assessor.

Nevada Vehicle Registration - License Plates

At the time of your NV vehicle registration, you will be given two license plates and stickers at no additional cost. Should you decide that you would like a customized plate, you can upgrade for an addition cost.
