Guide In Getting A Motorcycle License In Maryland State
Most states require a motorcycle license or endorsement before you can legally ride a motorcycle. In addition, if you want to ride a moped or scooter with an engine larger than a certain size, you may need to obtain a motorcycle license. Failure to meet your state's requirements for a motorcycle license may result in fines or even prison time.
However, obtaining a Maryland motorcycle license is simple. In Maryland, there are several ways to obtain a motorcycle license, and licensing requirements can vary depending on factors such as age, prior licensing, and experience.
The Class M License
All motor vehicle operators must be licensed to drive on Maryland's public roads. Motorcyclists are no different.
A Class M Motorcycle License is a separate license that must be obtained in addition to a Class C noncommercial driver's license. Driving a motorcycle with a standard driver's license is insufficient, and failing to obtain a Class M license may result in a fine, suspension of your driver's license, points added to your driving record, and your motorcycle being towed.
Requirements For Motorcycle License
If you already have a valid Maryland driver's license, taking a Motorcycle Safety Program course is the quickest way to get a motorcycle license. All licensed drivers who complete a motorcycle safety course approved by the MVA can present their certificate of completion to receive a Class M endorsement on their license.
Although a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program course is highly recommended for all riders, it is not required for applicants over 18. Class M endorsements are available to Maryland licensed drivers over 18 who can read road signs and pass vision, knowledge, and driving skill tests. All Maryland drivers must have at least 20/40 corrected vision in each eye, 140-degree field, and binocular vision.
The knowledge test will assess your understanding of traffic laws, road rules, and safe driving practices. The Motorcycle Operator Manual contains all the information from the knowledge test, and applicants should familiarize themselves with it before applying for their Class M license. An on-bike rider skill test will determine whether applicants can demonstrate a left "U" turn, sharp right turn from a stop, cone weave, normal stop, quick stop, obstacle swerve, and overall motorcycle control.
If they meet the minimum vision requirements, new Maryland residents can exchange their valid out-of-state motorcycle license for a Maryland Class M license. If an out-of-state license has been inactive for a year or more, the knowledge and rider skill tests, in addition to the vision test, are required.
Class M License Process
In Maryland, the process of obtaining a motorcycle license is similar to that of obtaining a driver's license. You must go to an MVA office, fill out an application, provide documentation, pass a series of tests, and pay a fee.
When you apply for your motorcycle license, you must bring the following documents with you:
- Proof of age
- Proof of identity
- Proof of Social Security Number
- Two proofs of address
Unless you have an exception, you must take the following tests:
- Vision
- Road signs and markers identification
- Written exam
- Motorcycle skills test
The MVA will mail your motorcycle license to your home address once you have completed all of the steps and paid the fee.

Under 18
If you are under 18, you must complete the Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program's Basic Ride Course at a training center before applying for a motorcycle license. After you finish the course, you must go to an MVA office and complete the application process, which includes submitting your motorcycle safety course certificate of completion. After that, you'll get a six-month license with a $9 annual fee.
Over 18
If you're over 18 and have motorcycle experience, you won't need to take a safety course before applying. However, if you take a safety course, you can bypass some of the application steps: you will not need to obtain your learner's permit, take a knowledge test, or complete a skill set.
If you do not complete the Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program, you must apply for a Class M learner's permit and pass the skills test before receiving your license.
You can transfer a valid motorcycle license from another state to a Maryland one if it hasn't expired. You must, however, meet the required vision requirements. If your out-of-state license expired years ago, you must also pass the knowledge and skills tests.

Maryland Fast Track Licensing
Because many people ride a motorcycle without a license or formal training, the Motor Vehicle Administration has relaxed some logistical requirements to encourage all motorcyclists to obtain the necessary license. The MVA's fast track program is intended to make motorcycle licensing quick and easy for riders with on-the-road experience.
Applicants for a fast-track license can take the knowledge and skills tests on the same day. There is no need for a learner's permit, and there is no fourteen-day gap between the knowledge and skills tests. If fast-track applicants fail the knowledge test on their first attempt, they will be coached on the correct answers and be allowed to retake the test on the same day.
Applicants who pass the knowledge test can take the on-cycle rider skill test on a street-legal motorcycle. The applicant's motorcycle must be insured, registered, tagged, have working lights, have no equipment violations, and be legally transported to the testing location.
Waiting Time
If you already have a driver's license, the MVA offers a "fast track" program that allows applicants to take the knowledge and skills tests on the same day. There is no need for you to have a learner's permit or to wait 14 days between the knowledge and skills tests.
Even if you fail the first knowledge test, you can be advised on the correct answers and retake it the next day. The skills test will then be taken on a properly registered motorcycle. Those who pass the test may eventually be issued a Class M license.
Motorcycle License Points
It's critical to understand the road rules before getting your motorcycle license. If you are convicted of violating traffic laws, your license may be suspended or revoked.
If you violate a vehicle-related law, such as speeding while riding your motorcycle, the MVA will add points to your driving record. When a driver accumulates three or four points, the MVA will issue a warning letter. A license holder with five to seven points must enroll in a Driver Improvement Program. The MVA will suspend your license if you have eight to eleven points. And if you accumulate 12 or more points, your license will be revoked.
