First Time Vehicle Registration in MA

Vehicle registration is required if you meet any of the following stipulations:

  • You have recently moved to Massachusetts
  • You have recently purchased a vehicle
  • You have recently received a vehicle as a gift
  • You have a vehicle that you have never registered

Getting Your Vehicle Registration Paperwork Together For Massachusetts Dealer-Purchased Vehicles

A Title (RMV-1) and a vehicle registration application will need to be completed and signed by the dealer.

Bring your RMV-1 application to your insurance agent for them to sign and stamp.

If the vehicle is financed, please be certain that the lien holder info is correct.

Attach the following documents to the RMV-1:
  • If the vehicle is new, attach the Certificate of Origin of manufacturer to the RMV-1.
  • If the vehicle was previously owned, attach the Certificate of Vehicle Title of the former owner, and, if applicable, a Dealer Reassignment forms. Be sure that the title includes the correct odometer reading, date sold and purchase price.
Visit your nearest full-service RMV center with your RMV-1 application and all other required documentation. At the time of your application, you will be required to pay a 6.25% sales tax that is calculated by the dealer’s selling price of the vehicle.

Within seven days of your registration date, a vehicle inspection sticker must be obtained.

Out-of-State Dealer Purchased Vehicles

Bring your Title RMV-1 and vehicle registration application to your insurance agent and ask your agent to sign and stamp the forms.

If the vehicle is financed, be certain that all information regarding the lien holder is correct.

You must accompany the RMV-1 with one of the following documents:
  • If the vehicle is new, Certificate of Origin of manufacturer
  • If the vehicle was previously owned, the Certificate of Vehicle Title of the former owner, and, if applicable, a Dealer Reassignment form. Be sure that the title includes the correct odometer reading, date sold and purchase price.
