First-Time Vehicle Registration in LA

First-time vehicle registration is required in LA when:

  • You’ve just relocated to Louisiana
  • You’ve just purchased a vehicle
  • You’ve received a vehicle as a gift
  • You’ve never had the vehicle registered, regardless of the length of ownership
You have 40 days from the time you purchase or receive your vehicle as a gift to register your vehicle, or you will face late fees that can increase the costs of your vehicle registration. If you’re registering an out-of-state vehicle, the allotted amount of time is 30 days.

Vehicle Registration – Insurance:

The state of Louisiana mandates that drivers are properly insured. Prior to registering your vehicle, you will need an auto insurance policy, another form of financial responsibility, or drivers in the state of Louisiana will not be granted permission to operate their vehicles.

Getting Your Vehicle Registration Paperwork Together

To register your vehicle in Louisiana, you will be required to complete the proper paperwork for your request to be processed. If your vehicle was purchased from a dealership the dealer should complete the vehicle registration process on your behalf.

If you are responsible for completing the vehicle registration yourself, you will need the following documents in order to have your request processed:

  • Vehicle title
  • Proof of required auto insurance
  • Registration/Title application
  • Personalized tag application, if desired
  • VIN and Emissions inspection certification for required vehicles
  • Completed odometer disclosure statement (if the vehicle was a private sale purchase)
  • UCC-1 Financing Statement, chattel mortgage or security agreement (when financing is involved)
For out-of-state vehicles you will also be required to bring the following documentation:

  • Proof of sales tax payment on your vehicle
  • Current vehicle registration information

When you request to have your vehicle registered, you are also completing the process for the tags for your vehicle. Be sure to calculate the Louisiana tag fees that will be added into your vehicle registration fees.

Adding Your Vehicle Registration Stickers to Your License Plates

The DMV office will issue your stickers that must be affixed to your license plates once your vehicle registration process is complete. These stickers must be properly affixed to your plates to show law enforcement that your vehicle is properly registered with the state of Louisiana, or you may receive a ticket.
