The purchase of a new automobile or truck means you are required to have your vehicle registered. First time vehicle registration is required in different circumstances, which include:

  • You have a vehicle which you’ve never had registered.
  • You have just purchased a new or used automobile or truck.
  • You were left the automobile or truck after the departure of a loved one.
  • You received the automobile or truck as a gift.
New residents to the state will have 10 days to complete the vehicle registration process. All others will have 15 days to register their vehicles.

Getting Your Kentucky Vehicle Registration Paperwork Together

Initial Kentucky vehicle registration requires you to:

  • As of 2005, the emissions testing program in Kentucky ended. However, vehicle owners with vehicles that do not have KY titles will be required to visit their local sheriff’s office to have the vehicle inspected. It will be necessary to provide your inspection certificate that shows your vehicle passed its inspection.
  • Complete a Vehicle Title / Registration form.
  • If applicable, provide a title lien statement.
  • Provide proof of your Social Security number.
  • Provide a Certificate of Origin from the manufacturer.
  • If you are registering an out-of-state vehicle, you will be required to provide the out-of-state title.
