CA State Regulations

There is plenty to know when buying or selling a car in CA.  The process involves the proper information and the proper forms.  Having the right knowledge and forms ensures that the seller is free of liability and that the buyer is getting the product that is worth the money.

Selling a CA Vehicle

  •  You will need your Vehicle Title in order to sell your vehicle.  On the rear side of the title, you will find Section A which is a designated area where you will print and sign your name in front of a notary public.
  • The buyer of the vehicle will be required to also print and sign their name in front of a notary public.
  • Prior to handing over the keys to your vehicle, make sure that you take the tags off the vehicle.  You can either keep the tags or turn them in to the DMV.
Buying a CA Vehicle

  • Prior to purchasing a vehicle, make sure that you have your auto insurance in place.
  • Ensure has complete the title and printed and signed their name on the back Section A.
  • Take the title to a notary public and print and sign your name.
  • Make certain that the odometer reading is recorded on the title.
  • Visit the CA DMV to transfer the title and register the vehicle in your name.  You can then apply for new plates or transfer the plates from your old vehicle to you new car.
  • You may be required to have a valid emissions inspection certification prior to the registration of your vehicle.
CA Vehicle Transaction without Paperwork

CA requires that a vehicle title be present prior to registering the vehicle.  Should you be the seller or buyer of a vehicle having the title in hand is essential.

  • Buyers beware if you are offered a vehicle without the title.
  • Not having a title to a vehicle may be a signal that the car is stolen.
  • Sellers, if you cannot find the vehicle title, obtain a replacement title prior to selling the vehicle.
CA Lemon Law

Tips for Car Buying

  • Just because a vehicle costs a little more, does not mean that it holds the value that it is being sold for.  Prior to purchasing a used vehicle, always order a Vehicle History Report.
  • When purchasing a new car, if you are not a mechanic, then definitely have a mechanic inspect the vehicle prior to its purchase.
  • If purchasing a vehicle from a dealer, the best time to purchase is between July and October, as the incentives are greater.
  • If you are asked to sign a financial form that is blank, refuse.
  • Make sure that everything is in writing.
